In the latest funding round of the prestigious Horizon Europe ERC Advanced Grants (ERC AdG) programme, three researchers from Saxony stood out against international competition with their innovative projects.
Prof. Beate Eschers of the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research (UFZ) has been awarded a grant of approximately €2.5 million over a five-year period for her project ToxSick (From toxic mixtures to disease). She is investigating the origins of civilization diseases through her ERC AdG-funded project. Together with her research team at the UFZ, she is exploring the hypothesis “that not individual chemicals, but rather the mixture of many chemicals that accumulated in the human body over the course of a lifetime, contribute to the development of civilization diseases.” The project aims to make a substantial contribution to research on the clinical pictures of cancer, reproductive and metabolic disorders, immune and cardiovascular diseases, and brain disorders.
Our warmest congratulations also go out to Prof. Dr. Stephan Grill of the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics (MPI-CBG) and to Prof. Dr. Anton Wallner and his team at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) on receiving the prestigious EU Research grants. Prof. Dr. Grill was honored for his project “DNA Sequence-Dependent Structure Formation in the Cell Nucleus,” and Prof. Dr. Anton Wallner for his project “SUPREME (Supernova and r-process radionuclides engraved on million-years-old archives from Earth and the Moon).”
ERC funding is open to all scientific disciplines and is awarded without thematic restrictions; the sole evaluation criterion is excellence. Research teams can be formed freely, and projects must be carried out at an institution of the researchers’ choice in Europe. The goal is to support individual researchers with groundbreaking ideas. The ERC offers various funding programs for different career stages—ranging from “Starting Grants” for early-career researchers to “Advanced Grants” for experienced pioneers in science. In addition, the ERC supports outstanding early-career research groups and initiatives designed to transform ERC project ideas into innovations.
