The six clusters under Pillar II “Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness” bundle topic-specific top-down calls addressing societal challenges and industrial technologies.
One new feature of the Horizon Europe 2026–2027 Pillar II work programmes is that the proportion of open topics has been increased. For these topics, “the expected results or impacts” are to be achieved through “approaches and methods” chosen by the researchers themselves rather than being prescribed by the EU
KoWi mentioned in the following issue of its newsletter how to identify these open topics:
- in clusters 2, 3, and 6, they are are distinctly marked as “Open Topic” in the call topic title
- in cluster 4, the topic title includes “Fast-track to..”
- In clusters 1 and 5, this marking was not applied
